Vintage Trombones
If you're thinking of taking up an instrument, and trombone is the sonorous brass instrument you've chosen, you're in for a lot of fun. Playing a brass instruments takes some lessons and hard work, however, they're some of the most rewarding instruments to take up at any age. As you decide between brand new and vintage, there are some definite advantage to buying a vintage trombone.
What Are Some Advantages of Buying Vintage?
One of the advantages to buying vintage is, of course, the economic one. However, there are some other reasons to go with a gently used, previously owned model.
- Environmental: Most instruments are not sustainable; if you throw them away, they simply corrode in landfills for eons. Recycling older used instruments is an environmentally friendly choice.
- Retain of value: Unlike other things that depreciate over time, used musical instruments at the very least retain their value, and some increase over time.
- History: Owning a used instrument is like a piece of art. Imagine all of the stories that your vintage trombone could tell if it could talk.
What Are the Different Types of Trombones?
Before you dive in, there are several different types of trombones to choose from, similarly to saxophones. Here is a relatively inclusive list:
- Tenor trombone: This is the most common and most popular type of trombone. It's also the easiest to play and learn, if you're just starting out.
- Valve trombone: These types are less common, but make beautiful music. Instead of a slide, like a tenor trombone has, the valve trombone has a valve.
- Alto trombone: This deeply voiced trombone is often used in an orchestra, and often has a featured part as a solo instrument.
- Bass trombone: The deepest voice of all, this trombone looks much like a tenor; it simply has a different tone.
- Soprano trombone: This highly voiced trombone looks much like a cornet, or trumpet.
- Marching trombone: This type of instrument is designed chiefly for a marching band.
What Are the Different Trombone Brands and Finishes?
Of course you want your trombone to make beautiful music, but its aesthetics and reputation are of interest as well.
- Popular trombone brands include King, Conn, Olds, and Holton, among others.
- Popular trombone finishes include brass, lacquer, silver, and nickel.
