Stages Cycling Power Meters

Accurately Judge Biking Power Output with a Stages Power Meter

It is important to accurately determine if a bike workout is different from other workouts in order to fine-tune the exercises. A Stages power meter can help gauge the actual power expended during a bicycle ride or workout and is an invaluable tool. Depending on the type of bike you possess and your preferences, there is a new or gently used Stages power meter to suit your needs.

What is a bicycling power meter used for?

Cyclists use power meters to measure the power that a rider outputs while riding. Power meters typically use a strain gauge that works by deflecting slightly when an external force is applied. This torque is then measured and factored in with the angular velocity. This results in a measurable output of force in wattage. With this information, riders can compare their workouts from one to the next. Stage power meters have many different types of power meters, and they are a popular choice in the Tour de France.

Types of Stages power meters

Power meters can be placed in five different areas of a bicycle. They are categorized depending on this placement. These are the types of power meters commonly used:

  • The rear wheel hub - These are the simplest power meters available. There is less force acting on the gauges, and the hub location is considered the most accurate.
  • The bottom bracket/spindle - The bottom bracket power meter is low maintenance and accurate. Installation is more difficult than the hub because of varying standards for bottom brackets.
  • Chainrings and crank spiders - Chainring power meters do not actually measure left/right power but instead estimate it. These systems can have compatibility issues.
  • Crank arm - Crank arm power meters are easy to swap between bikes, are fairly accurate, and can be single- or double-sided.
  • Pedals - These gauges are easy to swap between bikes, but they are less accurate than other power meters because of the placement.
Features of a Stages power meter

Each Stages power meter has certain standard features, which include the followiong:

  • High-resolution Gen 3 Stages electronics - These electronics have enhanced signal strength for consistent data capture and transfer.
  • Integrated accelerometer - The accelerometer has magnet-free cadence for a simple setup.
  • ANT+ and Bluetooth transmission - These signals will work with ANT+- and Bluetooth-enabled devices.
  • Active temperature compensation - This compensation provides consistent performance.
  • IPX7 water resistant – These power meters are water-resistant.
  • User-replaceable CR2032 batteries - These batteries are easy to replace.
  • Super light – The power meters are light-weight.
