Spoilers and Wings for Mercedes-Benz SL550

Mercedes-Benz-AMG drivers have the option of attaching a spoiler or wing to their vehicles. These accessories, which come in various designs and styles, can be attached to the Mercedes-Benz SL550. When looking for spoilers or tails for your Mercedes, it is useful to know what these accessories can do for your car and how they can change how your vehicle drives.

How is a spoiler different than a wing?

A spoiler is a piece of metal or other material on the front or back of an automobile. Spoilers on the front of a vehicle are called air dams, and sometimes, rear spoilers will house an extra brake light. These accessories are designed to make Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadsters more aerodynamic and increase airflow while in motion. The name spoiler refers to how it "spoils," or disrupts, air movement across the body of a vehicle, often known as drag. These features were originally intended to be on racing and sports cars, but they are commonly seen on mass-produced cars as well. The different types of spoilers are:

  • Front spoiler
  • Lip spoiler
  • Pedestal spoiler
  • Roof spoiler
  • Lighted spoiler
  • Truck spoiler

Conversely, a wing is meant to create downward force as air rushes around it, which actually increases drag. This is essentially the opposite function of a spoiler.

How do you install a spoiler on a Mercedes-Benz convertible?

If you plan on installing a spoiler on your own, follow these steps:

  • Open the trunk and remove the fabric board underneath.
  • Using a measuring stick, center the spoiler on top of the trunk. Use tape to ensure it is in the proper place so that the drill holes will be centered.
  • Use a punch to mark the alignment tabs where the holes will need to be drilled.
  • Punch a 1/4-inch hole through the vehicle where the marking tabs are placed.
  • Place the spoiler on top of the drill holes and screw the fasteners in underneath.
  • Replace the fabric back on the trunk. Close the trunk to ensure the spoiler is in proper position and placement.
What types of materials are Mercedes-Benz spoilers made out of?

A spoiler can be made of the following:

  • Carbon fiber
  • Fiberglass
  • Silicon
  • ABS plastic
How do know which spoiler is appropriate for your car?

To determine what spoiler should be paired with your Mercedes-Benz SL-Class vehicle, its important to know which style is suited for your car. Always review your automobiles manufacturing guide before purchasing a new spoiler to ensure it is the proper size. Mercedes-Benz-AMG manufactures their own spoilers, particularly for the SL class, so it is a matter of researching your particular year model and determining the right fit for you.
