The Ref 5513 is a steel dive watch Rolex produced for over 25 years. While it has many iterations, the core design of the 40-millimeter watch offers vintage luxury and surprising durability.
All About the Ref 5513 Rolex Submariner Watch
This model came nearly a decade after Rolex initially launched the Submariner line. The Ref 5513 is a steel dive watch built for underwater exploration like other Submariner watches before it. It has many of the resilient construction features of its predecessors and is one of the earliest Submariners to cement its now-recognizable design language.
Rolex first released the Ref 5513 in 1962. Initially, the Swiss watchmaker created this model as a more cost-effective option to the chronometer-certified Ref 5512 released a few years prior. However, it became so popular that Rolex discontinued the Ref 5512 while continuing to produce the Ref 5513 until the late 1980s.
Design and Construction
The Rolex Submariner Ref 5513 features a 40-millimeter stainless-steel case and acrylic crystal. This model has the distinction of being the last Submariner to have acrylic. It's also the last to offer a matte dial and bidirectional bezel.
Rolex offered the Ref 5513 with three dial options. All sport a black backdrop with luminous indexes in varying shapes. However, it's available with gold-accented gilt, matte, or gloss finishes.
The bidirectional bezel has a black aluminum insert and a 60-min scale. Like other Submariners released at the time, the Ref 5513 stainless-steel dive watch remains water-resistant to depths of 200 meters. It also has crown guards to prevent accidental damage, a newly introduced feature that became standard moving forward.
