Caliper Parts for Mercedes-Benz ML350

With the Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV, designers introduced a full array of sensors, ABS, and communication technology housed within their caliper units. Over time caliper parts may need to be replaced due to normal wear and tear. Luckily, with a wide selection to choose from, you can find the replacement caliper parts for Mercedes-Benze ML350 that you need.

What does the caliper system in the Mercedes-Benz ML350 do?

Brake calipers are an important part of the braking system. Inside the caliper are housed the disc pads, the brake use sensors, and ABS sensing system. Without a brake caliper holding, applying, and disengaging the disc pads to the rotor, the Mercedes would not stop.

What makes the Mercedes-Benz ML350 brake system intelligent?

Before the ML350 line of Mercedes-Benz was introduced in 2003, the idea of brake wear sensors was used here and there in the industry. Mercedes-Benz M-Class utilized the concept in every caliper, on every wheel. In the years since, Mercedes-Benz has improved on the intelligence concept, adding factors such as communication between brakes through improved ABS software. These factors took full effect in the new BlueTEC Mercedes-Benz M-Class models.

Are there different Mercedes-Benz ML350 brake calipers?

Yes. Two significant brake caliper designs operate differently.

  • Floating calipers have pistons on the inboard side of the caliper. When you apply your brakes, the piston pushes the inboard pad against the rotor and pulls the outside caliper with the outboard pad to the rotor.
  • Fixed calipers have pistons on both sides of the caliper. Sometimes as many as four pistons push the brake pads on either side of the rotor. The caliper housing does not move, only the disc pads move.
When should you replace your Mercedes-Benz brake caliper?

Four principle symptoms indicate a brake caliper is in need of inspection and possible repair:

  • First, in an ML350, there is a brake sensor device within each caliper. If you get an indicator light advising you to check your brakes, then follow through.
  • If you notice an oil leak around a wheel, this indicates a break in the seal of the brake fluid line. When this happens, the integrity of the seal is compromised and less power is placed on the piston that drives the pad forward.
  • Abnormal sounds, like a squeal or thud when you apply the brakes is a symptom of caliper failure you should never ignore.
  • If you feel a pull to the left or the right while driving, this may indicate damage to the caliper causing sudden unintended braking activity.
When should brake caliper parts be replaced?

Mercedes advises to change out all your brake pads and to check out your brake caliper operation every 40,000 miles. Of course, if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above before the 40,000-mile advised limit, then it is imperative that you examine these parts immediately. The loss of brakes is calamitous at any time and can lead to disastrous results for yourself and others.
