Keep Your Vintage Stag In-Shape With Triumph Stag Parts

The Triumph Stag is a vintage luxury car that was produced between 1971 and 1977. Only about 26,000 units were made, making it a scarce vehicle, hence, it is worth keeping in shape and holding on to. Due to its scarcity, there are few original Triumph Stag parts available, but you can find several aftermarket options on eBay.

The Triumph Stag variants

Though produced only for seven years, the Triumph Stag had four options, namely the early MK, MK I, MK II, and the late MK II, also known as MK III. Only a few notable features differentiate the models. Nonetheless, they are worth keeping in mind when shopping for Triumph Stag spares. They are:

  • Coach lines: MKII had twin coach lines. The feature is missing in the MK I.
  • Instrument dial needles: The dial needles for early MKs pointed downwards instead of up.
  • Lights: Early versions of the Triumph Stag had lights on top of the B-post, while later versions have lights on the T-bar. While the MK II variants had lights inside the glove box, the older versions had lights fitted on the door of the box.
  • Pressure cooling system: The later versions of the MK II were equipped with high-pressure cooling systems.
  • Automatic transmission system: The early MKs came with a Borg-Warner type 35 3-speed automatic transmission. Type 65 automatic transmission was used in the MKII and MKIII.
Upgrade Triumph Stag performance with engines for other car models

If you wish to revamp a Triumph Stag for the road, then the engine is the first part to upgrade. Fortunately, you can install engines from other car models. However, each model may have a slightly different procedure, so refer to the manufacturer's instructions. Other spare parts for Triumph Stag cars that you should upgrade for improved performance are:

  • Pistons and bearings.
  • Carburettor.
  • The radiator.
  • Oil cooler and oil seals.
  • Shocks.
  • Brake pedals.
Does a triumph Stag require an overdrive upgrade?

An overdrive is only necessary if your Triumph Stag had been fitted with a manual gearbox used in the Triumph TR4, TR5, and TR6 models. It is because the engine RPM of this transmission system drops significantly in the top gears (3rd and 4th). Since each aftermarket overdrive may have a slightly different installation procedure, refer to the manufacturer's instructions.

Is a Triumph Stag a collectable?

Yes. With very few units remaining around the world, these vehicles are highly collectable. The Giovanni Michelotti-styled luxury car was designed to be a rare sight. Again, in spite of its abbreviated time on the market, its value has increased significantly in the collectable market.
