NTSC-U/C Rating M-Mature Video Games

Video games are a popular form of entertainment for adults and children around the world, and these games have to be released regionally according to local standards. Purchasing an NTSC-U/C game ensures that the game will display within the appropriate frequency and other parameters. Choosing NTSC M means selecting a game intended for mature audiences according to standards set forth by the U.S. and Canada.

What platforms are NTSC-U/C and M-Mature video games released on?

NTSC is a common standard supported to some extent throughout the world even though it isn’t the prevalent format in all regions. The NTSC-U/C standard is specific to North America, and you’ll generally find games released in this format for systems that are sold at retail stores in the U.S. and Canada. The following platforms use NTSC-U/C and M-Mature:

  • Windows PC
  • Linux and Mac OS X
  • Xbox systems
  • Nintendo systems
  • PlayStation systems

What video game elements result in a Mature rating?

The United States, Canada, and Mexico rely on the Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB to establish ratings for video games. A game labeled NTSC M is configured for NTSC and has earned a Mature rating from the ESRB. Mature in this context means 17 years old or older. Elements that the ESRB deems mature include:

  • Intense and/or realistic violence
  • Nudity
  • Strong sexual themes and content
  • Frequent use of strong language

Why are video games categorized as mature?

Games are labeled with an NTSC M rating primarily as a guide for North American parents. NTSC M is a quick way to know that a game includes violence that you may not want your child subjected to. The label is also useful to adult gamers as a means of filtering out games for children. In addition, many countries outside North America have stricter content guidelines and apply censorship. Therefore, NTSC M is a means for foreign gamers to identify uncensored games.

What is NTSC and NTSC-U/C?

NTSC stands for National Television System Committee, and the NTSC standard dictates parameters for refresh rate, also known as picture frequency, and other picture characteristics. NTSC has largely been outmoded but is still in use for games to indicate that a game or system will look right on TVs in that region. NTSC-U/C is the NTSC standard specific to the United States and Canada.

How does NTSC differ from PAL?

PAL is widely used in the U.K. and throughout Europe. NTSC delivers 30 frames per second (fps) and features manual color correction. PAL delivers 25 fps and features automated color correction.

Is an NTSC game usable in the U.K. or Japan?

NTSC games will not work on PAL displays, such as those used in the U.K. NTSC is supported in Japan. Japan uses NTSC-M and NTSC-J, but the differences aren’t relevant to games.
