Toyota Matrix Motor Mounts

Driving around on bumpy, uneven roadways will start to wear down all the parts that keep your Toyota Matrix running in peak condition. Eventually, brakes will wear out, engine parts will be ground down, and even the motor mounts that keep your engine secured to the frame of your Matrix will eventually tear, crack, or otherwise falter, leading to the need for their replacement. Knowing more about the motor mounts on your Toyota matrix model can simplify the process of selecting the proper mounts for your needs.

How are the motor mounts on your Toyota constructed?

While there are a variety of motor mounts available for your Matrix that have different attributes, they are all constructed in a similar manner. The mount is secured to the engine and has bushings made of various materials to dampen noise and vibration, a bracket that bolts into the frame to connect the engine to the frame, and mounting hardware to keep everything secure.

  • Rubber mounts are the more common model available on the market and also the ones your Matrix came equipped with from the factory. A sleeve is placed over the mount where it meets up with the frame, providing a buffer to absorb the noise and movement coming off the motor and keeping it from transferring into the cabin of your Toyota. The rubbers flexibility will allow for a bit of engine movement causing a slight loss of power.
  • Polyurethane motor mounts offer a higher performance option for your Toyota Matrix. Polyurethane is stronger and more rigid than rubber, meaning the engine will have less ability to move, and delivering more power to the wheels. The tradeoff is that it will be louder and you will feel more movement in the steering wheel and pedals.
  • For a truly high-performance option that is not for everyday travel, there are solid engine mounts that forego any sort of bushing and use a straight metal-to-metal connection between motor and frame. This will keep the motor completely stable so no power is lost, but it will increase noise inside the vehicle.
  • Hydraulic mounts offer a unique answer to having a quiet smooth ride in your Toyota Matrix. They use hydraulic fluid instead of a solid substance to absorb engine movement and work really well at mitigating sound and vibration.
What are OEM and aftermarket motor mounts?

A decision you will need to make after figuring out what kind of motor mounts to purchase for your Toyota Matrix is whether to get them through the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or aftermarket. OEM means the mounts in question were designed by Toyota and produced either by them or one of their subsidiary companies. They are designed specifically for your Matrix and are backed by Toyota. The latter term is an umbrella definition for every other company that produces motor mounts, and their products tend to be more universal as far as what make and model vehicle they can fit on. Depending on what kind of motor mount you are looking for, a third party product may be the only choice available. Quality wise, there is no reason to think one is better than the other for your Toyota Matrix.
