Lycoming Complete Aviation Engines

Lycoming is a leading manufacturer of complete aviation engines. These types of engines help propel an aircraft, like a helicopter or airplane. Lycoming Engines has a rich history of producing a variety of engines, for a variety of airplanes and helicopters.

What is Lycoming?

Lycoming Engines is an American aircraft motor manufacturer. What began as a sewing machine and bicycle factory quickly became the Pennsylvania-based company that now makes various air-cooled, four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines. Lycoming manufactures both piston and turbine designs. Driven by the market during an era involved in war, Lycoming has continued to manufacture many made-for-air products.

What is an aviation engine and how does it work?

This type of motor is the mechanical power behind its propulsion system. While the first ones in history were steam-powered, contemporary ones are typically powered by either piston or gas turbine engines. These machines have many working parts that cause rotations and power the airplane.

What types of engines are there?

The two main types of these engines are piston and turbine. There are many models and variations within these categories, but they can be classified as the following:

  • Piston-powered machines use cylinders to change pressure into rotating motions. Many aircrafts use this type of motor. Types of these include in-line engines, which refer to motors containing a singular row of chambers, v-types that contain cylinders arranged in two in-line banks, and horizontally opposed ones that feature chambers on opposing sides. Other types include radial motors, which contain rows of chambers that are arranged around a crankcase, and a rotary motor that contains a similar design of chambers, but the crankcase rotates.
  • Turbine-powered machines aren’t used as often in airplanes, but they can be found mostly in helicopters. They use compression and combustion chambers to create hot gas. When the hot gas expands, it forces pressure and causes rotation.
What kinds of complete engines does Lycoming manufacture?

Over the years, Lycoming Engines has produced a wide array of products. The first flight machine created by Lycoming was the nine-cylinder R-680 radial. From there, they have manufactured opposed cylinder engines as well as supercharged, turbocharged, fuel-injected, helicopter, radials, vertical installation, and turbine machines. Lycoming’s line-up includes mostly opposed cylinder machines that range from four to eight chambers and offer anywhere from 100 hp to 400 hp. These can be fuel-injected, geared, and/or turbocharged.

Lycoming Engines manufactures complete aviation engines that are entirely built and ready to install. They come with all the necessary parts to ensure performance and quality.
