Supercharge Your Computer by Upgrading Its RAM

Nowadays, computers can do so much. Even just a simple-looking laptop can actually do a lot as a computing machine. Yet there are limits, and often times, it doesn't become apparent until after a purchase. Upgrading your RAM, even from just 4 GB to something like the Hynix 8 GB computer memory cards can have a huge impact on your laptop's performance. However, there are important considerations, such as how many MHz or which type, like DDR3, you need.

Why Might I Need More RAM?

RAM stands for random access memory, and it's what your laptop uses to run all the programs on your computer. You can do a lot with just 4 GB RAM, so what's the point of upgrading to 8 GB? Well, if you're experiencing some of the following issues, it might be time to upgrade from just 4 GB:

  • You like to play some moderately advanced video games and they're freezing up. Most games will run okay on 8 GB of memory but not 4 GB. If you're playing advanced games, you may need to upgrade your memory all the way to 16 GB RAM.
  • Your computer stalls when you edit photos. These large file types are harder to manage with less memory.
  • Your computer freezes when you have a lot of tabs open; 4 GB RAM allows you to browse a few tabs, but more than five or six, and things start to get tricky unless you have more memory.

How Do I Make Sure My New RAM Is Fast?

The whole purpose of upgrading to 8 GB is to make your laptop runs faster. So what do you need to look for?

  • Make sure your getting RAM that uses at least DDR3 technology. DDR3 stands for Double Date Rate Type 3, and it basically describes the way your RAM works. The technicalities are a bit complex, but DDR3 doubles the transfer number over its predecessor, DDR2, and will be faster.
  • Find memory modules with a good bus speed. This refers to the amount of data a circuit can handle at one time. The more data it can have, the faster it will be, and your memory will be more effective. Bus speed is measured in Megahertz (MHz).
  • Almost all DDR3 RAM units, such as those from Hynix, will have at least 1333 MHz, which should be enough to give your laptop a meaningful boost.
