Choosing 2 GB Computer RAM

Alongside the processor, GPU, and HDD, a computer's short-term memory is one of the most important factors in its performance. Choosing memory with the right capacity and speed can really speed up your HP laptop or desktop.

Is 2 GB of RAM Enough?

  • If most of your time on the computer is basic office work like writing and printing documents, 2 GB of memory can be plenty. It is enough to run either the 32 or 64 bit version of the Windows 10 operating system as well as popular office applications.
  • If you want to play games on your laptop, especially modern games, a 2 GB memory module may not be sufficient. Your computer may also struggle with other memory-intensive applications like running photo and video editing software or keeping a lot of browser tabs open. These may run better with 8 or 16 GB.
  • Choosing 2 gigabyte modules doesn't mean that you are limited to 2 GB RAM. Depending on your motherboard, you can attach dual memory modules or even more to increase your computer's memory. This is easiest if all of the modules run at the same speed and latency.

How Should I Choose Computer Memory?

  • Make sure that the memory you choose is the right generation to be compatible with your computer. DDR3 RAM won't fit into a slot designed for DDR2 because they have different numbers of pins. Later generations run faster and consume less power, and longstanding manufacturers will have made several generations of memory.
  • Laptop and desktop RAM are also different and incompatible. Laptops take SO-DIMM modules like DDR3L, which are designed to fit into the smaller space inside a laptop where full-size memory modules wouldn't fit. Some full-size motherboards can accept laptop memory though.
  • RAM speed measures how many operations the memory unit can perform per second. DDR RAM modules are numbered by generation and by speed. Speed can be measured in MHz as with DDR3-1333 memory, which runs at 1333 MHz. It can also be measured in bits per second, so you may see designations like PC3-10600: this is third-generation DDR3 memory with a peak data rate of 10600 MB per second.
  • Different types of memory can't always be mixed. Their timings and voltage have to match, and using different memory speeds together will make your computer memory run at the slowest speed. It is usually safest to use identical modules, like two sticks of HP PC3-12800.

Can I Install New Memory Myself?

  • Full-size motherboards are designed to be modular. So long as you are careful, installing new memory or other components like processors is easy enough to be done at home. Memory modules usually just clip into place so they are easy to swap.
  • Laptops can be harder to upgrade, as essential components like the memory and the processor may not be accessible. This is especially true of smaller models.
  • Before you open up your computer, you should make sure that it is switched off and completely unplugged. You should also touch metal objects occasionally to discharge any static electricity that has built up in your clothing or even wear an anti-static wristband.
