What Is a UPS System?

UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is an electrical device providing power to a load in the case of a power outage or when the power input fails. A UPS system can be a lifesaver during outages because it allows you to continue your work for a certain time and to save important documents on your personal computer or other smart devices. An uninterruptible power supply protects your electronic devices from surges and other varied power-related problems.

What Are the Benefits of a UPS Battery Backup System?

  • Continuity of operation: When plugged into a wall outlet, the UPS power supply allows safe operation for a particular period of time. By switching to using power from batteries, the UPS prevents data loss and allows the operators to shut down the computers or other network equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Protection: This system offers increased protection. This is because the circuit in this power device continuously monitors the voltage, it can feel surges, spikes, and outages. Therefore, when the uninterruptible power supply senses an electrical problem, it switches to AC power, which a battery generates. This way, it provides a high level of protection for every electrical device in your home.

What Are the Factors to Consider When Choosing an Uninterruptible Power Supply?

  • Load profile: With the number of equipment you know you need to be plugged into the UPS, you'll be able to tell your energy requirement. You'll just need to add up the total electrical load of all the equipment identified. Every product has a watt rating listed, which is the maximum wattage that can attach to the battery backup outlets and still have a decent runtime in the event of a power problem. If there is too much attached, the battery will not be able to support it. Ensure that you get a backup power system with a power capacity that is 25 percent higher than your total power needed.
  • Uptime requirements: The most basic UPS will give you just enough time to save your work and shut down all of your equipment in a safe manner. However, if you want to keep working through a minor power outage or blackout, some UPS will give you up to an hour, depending on how much equipment you're powering.
  • Outlets: A UPS should have enough battery backup outlets. For instance, we have APC and CyberPower backups that come with seven outlets (five battery backups and two surge-only outlets) and a USB port for convenient charging.
