Buyer's Guide for Dynaco Power Vintage Amplifiers and Tube Amps

Amps are a core part of the signal chain whether you are playing an instrument or just enjoying some music. Dynaco vintage models use designs and even parts from the 1960s onward. A vintage amp has a unique tone due to the warm harmonics that the vacuum tubes add to the sound, and many people specifically seek the high quality of output audio that comes from amplifiers of this time.

How do vintage tube amps work?

Vacuum tubes were the first technology used for electrical sound amplification. The first electric guitars and similar instruments all used these kinds of amps. In the 1970s, audio companies developed the solid-state amplifier, which was more durable and easier to manufacture. However, vacuum tubes impart a warm distortion to their output in a partially random way that solid-state models cannot replicate. Because this warm distortion was such a core part of many classic guitar sounds in mid-century rock, jazz, and blues, it is a highly sought-after effect. Contemporary tubes and solid-state "modeling amplifiers" can get close, but only an original, vintage model can truly capture this sound.

How many watts do you need from an amp?

The wattage is a measure of how much power the amp pushes to each channel. Each channel supports one speaker. So, for example, a two-channel 400-watt model supplies up to 200 watts to each channel. A speaker that can process 200 watts will make the best use out of such an amplifier. Anything with less power won't be able to reach the same high levels of sound and might wind up losing detail or even introducing additional distortion. Try to match the wattage ratings of your amplifier and speakers for best results. There should be no risk of damage if there is a mismatch. You just won't be tapping into the full potential of whichever unit can use more watts.

What materials are used in the construction of Dynaco amps?

Units can be constructed out of the following materials:

  • Wood: Wood is most commonly present in the frame and the interior support. Wood has tonal characteristics and provides lightweight strength and durability.
  • Rubber: The most common use for rubber is in the vacuum tubes and, in rare cases, supports or footing on the base of the case.
  • Metal, including steel and aluminum: Metal plays a role in the frame as well, and it makes up the wiring and electronics that carry the audio signals out to the drivers.
