Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing that typically takes place in either fall or winter on short tracks about one and a half to 2 miles long. Pavement, woods, hills, obstacles, and tricky terrain decorate the course to test riders’ levels of aerobic capacity and handling skills. Some short stretches are unable to be ridden on and require riders to carry cycles to the next section of the course in order to re-mount and resume riding.

The sport incorporates features of both mountain and road biking. Cyclocrosses typically look similar to road bikes in that their frames are lightweight, and their handlebars are curved under. Tires are narrow, but they often have greater clearance than road bikes, rugged treads, and stronger frames. Lower gearing and cantilever or disc brakes help navigate rough courses. Cyclocrosses are built to accommodate a more upright riding position for leverage on steep gradients.

If grime is frozen onto your cyclocross bike, take it to the car wash and use the soapy power washer to free it from dirt and mud. Once it’s clean, wipe your bike down with a soft, dry towel. Use your favorite shine agent to polish the frame.
