Volkswagen Rabbit Fans and Kits

The fan assembly is an integral part of your Volkswagen Rabbit model that helps to prevent overheating by keeping the engine cool. After a number of years, you may need to replace the fan to keep your Rabbit in good working condition. Before you do so, its important to know how the Volkswagen fan works and what type of components youll be working with.

The fan assembly on this particular VW model is a dual-fan system. Theyre electric and work with the hatchbacks built-in thermostat to regulate the temperature. The main fan has an automatic function that turns on and off based on how the engine is running. The second fan is initiated when the air conditioner is turned on. It is also programmed to initiate when temperatures reach a critical threshold.

The fans work in tandem with the radiator system. The Volkswagen Rabbit utilizes a pusher design. The fans are placed directly in front of the radiator and just behind the grille. As you drive your car, the air that flows through the grille is pushed over the radiator. Radiators are filled with coolant that absorbs heat. Air is used to dissipate that heat so that the coolant can continue to keep the engine cool and functional.

To operate efficiently, the fan of your Volkswagen car needs a number of unique components.

• Blades: The core component of the system, blades are designed to deliver a powerful burst of air. Theyre angled for strength and feature an electronic connection for power. The Volkswagen Rabbit needs two blades.
• Controller: The controller sends the signal to the fan blades. They utilize a temperature switch that reads information from the Rabbits thermostat.
• Motor: The motors spin the blades to push air over the radiator.
• Plug Pigtail: This wire connects to the fan motor to provide it with power to run.
• Shroud: Typically made of plastic, the shroud holds the fan blades in place and connects to the Volkswagens grille. They feature screw loops for attachment, wire guides, and spots to house additional components.

The fan assembly is placed in the front of the Volkswagens hood. Accessing the area to remove and replace the fan requires you to move a few components out of the way.

1. Disconnect the battery: Before you do anything else, remove the ground strap from the battery terminal and position it under the vehicle hood so that it cant accidentally make contact as you work.
2. Remove the charged air pipe: This pipe runs from the Volkswagens induction system to the throttle body. It can be removed with a bolt and Torx screw.
3. Remove the air intake and diverter: These components are located on the left side of the Volkswagen Rabbit engine and are attached with Torx screws.
4. Unscrew the fan shroud: The shroud is held together by numerous Torx screws. Remove these and disconnect the wiring on the back to slip the assembly out.
