How does the Honda CR-V’s cooling fan work?

The cooling fan is mounted between the motor and the radiator. The fan forces air through both the radiator and the air conditioner’s condenser. In the case of the Hondas radiator, hot antifreeze circulates once the motor reaches its operating temperature. The cooling fan ensures that it’s cooled when it returns to the motor. When the A/C is turned on, hot refrigerant flows through the condenser to be cooled by the air from the cooling fan. The fan runs when the temperature of the CR-Vs motor is high and/or when the A/C is running.

What are some common reasons the cooling fan might fail?
  • Blocked fan blades: Whether its physical damage or a foreign object obstructing them, jammed blades will stop the fan from running.
  • Thermostat fault: The cooling fan is turned on when the motor reaches its operating temperature to keep it from overheating. If the thermostat is faulty, the cooling fan may fail to turn on or run inconsistently because the temperature of the motor is not being detected correctly.
  • Electrical fault: A fault somewhere in the electrical wiring and connectors that power and control the fan can cause it to stop working.
  • Faulty motor: An electrical or mechanical failure inside the fan’s motor can cause the fan to stop working.
What are the symptoms of a malfunctioning cooling fan?
  • Overheating: Your Honda’s motor will run too hot or overheat when the cooling fan fails to run properly.
  • Check engine light: High motor temperatures will trigger the check engine light.
  • Weak air conditioning: The condenser is responsible for cooling the refrigerant used by the A/C to produce cold air, so when the cooling fan fails, the A/C will fail too.
How can the fan motor be tested?

The cooling fan and its electrical wiring are not accessible for testing while in the Honda CR-V or CR-V EX-L, so you will need to remove these components to check the fan motor. Once you have the fan out of the vehicle, put it on a workbench and inspect it for any obvious mechanical problems.

To test the motor, an easy method is to hook it up to a power supply and see if it runs. Find a 12-volt battery and a pair of test wires. The more convenient kind have alligator clips on one end and probes on the other. Hook up the wires to the battery. Determine which pins on the motor’s electrical connector are power and ground. If the motor is still good, it should start running when you touch the test wires to these pins. If not, the motor is bad and should be replaced.
