What does the BMW X5 SUV radiator fan do?

The radiator fan is mounted in front of the radiator and behind the bumper cover of the BMW X5. It forces air through the radiator and A/C condenser unit, cooling the antifreeze that flows through the radiator and the refrigerant that flows through the condenser. In this way, it helps to dissipate heat from the BMW’s motor and from the A/C system.

What causes the BMW X5 radiator fan to stop working?
  • Obstructed fan blades: The blades can be damaged or foreign objects can jam them. In either case, the fan can be prevented from running.

Is there a way to test the BMW’s fan motor?

When an electrical fault is suspected in the vehicle but can’t be located, it can be simpler to test the fan’s motor to be sure it is not the problem. Remove the fan assembly from the BMW SUV and place it on a workbench. Locate a 12-volt power source such as a battery and a pair of test wires. Then, follow these steps:

  • Clip the test wires onto the power source’s positive and negative posts.
  • Determine the power and ground pins in the fan’s electrical connector. Connect the positive test wire to the power pin.
  • Connect the negative test wire to the fan’s ground pin.
  • If the motor runs, then it doesnt need to be replaced. If it doesn’t run, then it’s faulty.
