Spark Plugs and Glow Plugs for Isuzu

Isuzu specializes in SUVs and pickup trucks. When Isuzu drivers start to experience ignition-related problems, a replacement part may be the only solution. While there are many components that cause ignition failure, the spark plugs are a common culprit.

What do the spark plugs do?

Spark plugs transmit the electrical energy needed to light the combustion chamber. This jump starts the combustion process, which relies on a series of controlled explosions to generate the necessary vehicular power. The plugs initiate this process by creating a lighting bolt facsimile within the chamber.

They do not sustain the process, however. They actually help dissipate chamber heat after initiation. This is because they maintain a specific heat range known as thermal performance. This range ensures that the plugs are hot enough to jump start the combustion process but cool enough to prevent unwanted pre-ignition. This heat range is essential because if they fall outside of the designated range, it can lead to overheating or carbon fouling.

What are the main parts of the spark plug?

When an Isuzu driver experiences ignition trouble, it may indicate the failure of one of the following components:

  • Insulator body: The insulator body provides grip and protects the plug from crossfire. They are usually made of aluminum oxide ceramic.
  • Shell: Most plugs are equipped with steel shells, which are necessary to tolerate the high temperatures.
  • Gasket: Some Isuzu vehicles may use plugs with gaskets, which help to seal the shell. Other Isuzu vehicles may use a gasket-free option. These have a tapered shell design as the sealing method.
  • Terminal: This is located at the top of the part, and it connects to the wire and the center electrode.
  • Hex head: This head is used to secure the plug onto the engine.
  • Electrodes: These parts have two electrodes: the center electrode and the ground electrode. The spark jumps between these two electrodes before it ignites the air/fuel mixture.
What is the difference between spark plugs and glow plugs?

Isuzu vehicles equipped with diesel engines will use glow plugs rather than the more conventional alternatives. They have a similar function, but they have a heating coil rather than electrodes. This heats the combustion chamber, raising it to the temperature needed to start diesel engines.

What are the signs of malfunctioning spark or glow plugs?

When these essential ignition components start to malfunction, Isuzu drivers may experience a wide range of symptoms that include:

  • Reduced acceleration: When these parts start to wear out, drivers may notice that their vehicle is slow to speed up. That is due to inadequate combustion efficiency.
  • Misfires: Misfires are often caused by damaged ignition wires. They may be accompanied by sputtering engine noises.
  • Vehicle does not start: If the spark or glow plugs are completely worn out, the Isuzu vehicle may not start at all.
