Presas de Aire Para Pontiac Firebird

Air Dams for your Pontiac Firebird

Other than channeling air to the engine for cooling, a well-engineered air dam is able to enhance the handling of your vehicle in high-speed driving environments. It is in some cases molded as part of the front bumper but can also be attached separately under the radiator. Choose from the wide range available for your Pontiac Firebird.

How does the air dam work?

Also referred to as an air deflector or front spoiler in some cases, the air dam is an aerodynamic device that acts as an air intake. It works by preventing excessive air from going beneath the car and as a result, increases the downforce and reduces drag on the vehicle. This allows you to get better grip and control when traveling fast.

What are the different materials used in making Firebird air dams?

Air dams can be constructed from different materials such as metal, plastic, fiberglass or carbon fiber. Each of them has advantages:

  • Metal - The materials commonly used are high-grade aluminum or stainless steel. They are both strong, durable, and resistant to harsh elements, such as UV radiation. They also have a luster to them that adds an aesthetic appeal to your Firebird. An example that you can find is the mirror stainless steel air deflector for 1993-2002 Firebird Formula and Trans Am models.
  • Carbon fiber - This is another common material used in the construction of the deflectors. Carbon fiber is very durable and lighter in weight compared to the rest. It also does not crack easily. Composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced polymers and carbon fiber reinforced plastic can also be used.
  • Plastic - ABS plastic and polyurethane are common in the plastic category. Polyurethane gives a superior finish to the car and is quite flexible. ABS plastic, on the other hand, is much tougher and resistant to impact, chemicals, and heat.
  • Fiberglass - Fiberglass is a lightweight material that enhances performances in a car. It also does not warp during temperature changes. The paint on the fiberglass air dam adheres and so will not come off.

How do I install the air dam to my Pontiac?

They will usually come as three-piece kits for installation under the radiator and the side skirts or as a single piece for replacement of the damaged unit. Most are OEM direct bolt-on replacement parts so you are guaranteed correct fitting to your vehicle. You can install using the following simple procedure:

  • Raise the vehicle with a jack stand to support it
  • Unscrew and remove the old deflectors from their place
  • Screw the new center deflector beneath the bumper to ensure it is flush and centered.
  • Bolt the side pieces in their mounting holes on the sides and you have it complete.
