A Guide to ATSC Video Capture Cards and TV Tuner Cards for PCI Ports

Video capture cards and TV tuner cards have a variety of applications, from streaming games to recording video content to a computer. The models that use ATSC-conforming format and record to a PCI port are applicable to a wide variety of setups for U.S. users. These cards have an array of features and options.

What is ATSC?

ATSC stands for the Advanced Television Systems Committee. This is the organization that sets standards for digital television broadcasts. ATSC standards in the United States define the format of television signals, so an ATSC-compatible capture card is compatible with televisions in the United States and parts of Latin America. Whether for recording live broadcasts or streaming gaming content on a U.S. TV, an ATSC-compatible card is necessary.

What is PCI?

PCI stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect. It is the standard design for ports and connections between computers and external input/output devices. PCI is significant for video capture because there are different versions of the standard depending on when your computer was built. Later versions are faster and can support higher resolutions of video data. You should find a card that is rated for the same version as your motherboard.

Are capture cards internal or external?

Video cards can be both internal — mounted inside the case of the computer — and external, in which case they connect via a cable.

  • Internal: Internal cards tend to have faster connections, are better protected from damage, take up less space, and don't require as much cabling.
  • External: External cards are more portable and are better suited to transportation or switching between multiple computers. For some computers, there may not be room to mount an internal capture card or it may not be easy to install, so an external model offers additional convenience.

Do you need a TV tuner or a capture card?

Although they often come on the same product, TV tuners and capture cards perform different roles. A TV tuner can reach digital TV channels and display them on a screen, while a capture card transmits whatever audio and visual signal is reaching the TV along the connections to a computer. For the purposes of gaming and live streaming, only the capture component is important. For watching TV on a computer, the TV tuner is also necessary. The most common use for a capture card is if you want to stream your gaming online for viewers, but you play console games, not PC games. For PC use, you run the console output through the card and to your computer, where you connect it to streaming software.
