How to Choose an Uninterruptible Power Supply for Your Computer

Normally, we use power strips to protect our electronics from power surges, however, it does nothing when the power goes out and your computer comes to a halting crash. In such a case, you'll need a battery backup, or an uninterrupted power supply (UPS). UPS units are like power strips that contain a big battery inside, providing a buffer against power supply interruptions. This buffer can range from a few minutes to an hour or more depending on the size of the unit.

Why Choose an APC UPS?

APC is an acronym for American Power Conversion, coming from Schneider Electric, and as a UPS it is in very wide use. Many recommend the use of a back-UPS for the following reasons:

  • Surge protection: This UPS will protect your computer and its accessories from power outages and power surges. You may argue that your power never goes out. This is only true to some point. Some outages only last for a fraction of a second, and you may not notice them; however, each time your computer and its accessories go out even for this length of time, it causes damage to the equipment. Another danger to your computer is that each time the electricity comes back on, power surges occur, and this can also damage your equipment as well. With this UPS, you'll be safe from surge-related issues.
  • Extended power supply time: In addition to being surge protectors, these UPS systems have batteries that provide power for up to 15 minutes when there's power outage and this is enough time for you to save your work, turn off the computer and turn on the auxiliary power.
  • Saves you money: If the data in your computer is lost during a power surge or power outage, then recovering this data can be a very expensive ordeal. Having a back-UPS equipment in place saves you a lot of money as you won't lose your data, hence no data recovery will be necessary.

What Are Some of the Features to Look for When Selecting a UPS?

Uninterruptible power supply systems undergo regular upgrades; therefore, you need to know the key features to look for. Here are the latest features

  • Built-in self-test: When installing a UPS system, it's a normal procedure to test it out to ensure it works as expected. Latest UPS systems come with a self-test feature that obviates the need for a load bank while carrying out a test of all important components.
  • Flexible configuration and energy storage: A UPS should allow full front access for easier installation against the wall or back to back with other UPSs. Some UPS systems come with a smart-slot feature for an accessory card. Latest UPS systems use lead-acid batteries for the power-saving purpose.
  • Sine wave: Get a UPS system that has a modified sine wave since they're to satisfy the efficiency requirements of the photovoltaic system.
