The Confederacy issued hundreds of bills during the American Civil War. Money issued by the Confederate States of America (CSA) and issued by individual states are well sought-after collectibles. The old 1864 Confederate $20 bill is one type of bill collectible and you can find these vintage $20 US confederate currency bills on eBay.

Features of the 1861 $20 bill

There are three different designs of the 1861 $20 bill authorized by the Confederate States of America. These include:

  • Type-9: The first Confederate $20 bill printed was the Type-9. It was issued from July 25 to Oct. 26, 1861. The front had a large image of a sailing ship. Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond, Va., printed 264,988 bills.
  • Type-17: The Type-17 had a center panel of a nautical scene. The corners of the bill contained illustrations of the Liberty and Ceres. Hoyer & Ludwig only printed 43,732 of this design. They were issued from Sept. 14 to Nov. 5, 1861.
  • Type-18: The last type of 1861 20-dollar bill is the Type-18. This design was by far the most common type of 1861 Confederate $20 bills, with more than 2 million produced. The center panel was a sailboat, like the Type-9, but this bill additionally had a sailor at the boat wheel printed on the bottom left corner. These bills are dated Oct. 24, 1861, to Aug. 16, 1862. Thus, this design can be found with both the 1861 and 1862 dates.
Characteristics of the 1864 Confederate $20 bill

The old 1864 Confederate $20 bill was part of the seventh series of notes authorized by the Confederate States of America. This was the last series of money produced by the treasury of the CSA. The 1864 $20 bill has an image of the Tennessee State Capital in the center. It also has a picture of Alexander Stevens, the vice president of the CSA, in the bottom right corner. Keating & Ball of South Carolina printed more than 4 million bills of this design.

What should you look for when collecting Confederate $20 bills?

When collecting the old Confederate $20 bill, you will need to decide if you want to invest in one or more of the different 1861 or 1864 versions. Since these bills have different characteristics, you should choose the one that you like or want the most. Some bills may be rarer than others, which contributes to their value. The 1861 and 1864 Confederate $20 bill worth are determined by the condition of the bill's paper. Fair to good condition pieces can be found on eBay and are valued at approximately under $100. However, 1861 Confederate $20 bills in excellent condition can go for hundreds or thousands of dollars.
